This depends on how much electricity you use and size of your roof. The average sized system in New Zealand is about 5kw, but a 3kw or 7kw may be better suited. See System Size for more information.

The average sized system (5kw) can cost between $9,000 - $12,000 depending on the quality of components. There are then option extras such as solar batteries or monitoring systems which cost extra. See Price guide for more information.

Most systems will be connected to the electricity grid and any energy you don’t use in the house can be sold to your electricity retailer. Systems can also have a battery added to them, which means during any blackout you can still run things like your fridge and tv!

Another option is to go completely off-grid where you have a large array of panels and multiple batteries.

This depends on how much of the solar energy you can use. Generally, though with a 3/4 bedroom house, with average electricity use and well sized system you should save between $800-$1,500 per year. See Savings for more information.
